A calm mind is so important for happiness and overall wellbeing! A lot of people are struggling with stress (including me) these days and we tend to forget to give our mind a break. Incorporating some rest time into your daily routine is really necessary to keep your mind healthy. Luckily it doesn’t have to be hard to get in some rest on a day to day base! Here are 10 easy ways to create a calm mind:
Meditation is one of the best ways to give your mind some rest! Meditation triggers the parasympathetic nervous system and this helps you to recover from stress and rest. If you find it hard to meditate on your own, you can also use a guided meditation app on your phone. My favorite guided meditation apps are Headspace and Insight Timer. When you meditate on your own you can do a bodyscan for example. You can do a bodyscan by closing your eyes and focus on each body part for awhile.
When you’re busy and stressed, you tend to breathe in short and shallow breaths. This creates more stress and anxiety, which we don’t want ofcourse. When you notice you’re breathing shortly, try to breathe deeply and slowly for a few minutes. Lay your hands on your belly and really try to breathe from your belly. This relaxes the body and helps you to calm down.
One of my personal favorite ways to calm my mind is to follow a yoga class. You can follow a yoga class at a yogastudio or at home. There are many yoga classes on YouTube for example which you can do at home. If you have zero experience with yoga, it is good to know that there are many forms of yoga. Vinyasa yoga for example is an active form of yoga, while hatha yoga is a more slow form of yoga. My personal favorite is yin yoga. Yin yoga is a slow form of yoga were you hold the poses for a long time (around 3 to 5 minutes). This form of yoga really has a meditative effect on my mind and body. Just try a few classes and figure out what type of yoga suits you the best! TIP: I really like Yoga with Kassandra on YouTube and yoga studio Balansz in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Being in the same environment for too long can really effect the state of your mind. So, grab your coat and go outside! You can even do this on your break at work or school. Just take a walk around the building and you will feel fresh and energetic when you get back. If you have more time (for example on the evening or on a day off) you can go to a beautiful place in nature to have long walk. Focus on all the beauty around you an breathe the fresh air in.
Take a warm bath or shower
A warm bath or shower is like therapy! Clean your body with your favorite body products and really feel the warm water on your body. Make your bath or shower ritual even more therapeutic by hanging fresh eucalyptus in your bathroom. This is especially great in fall / winter because the essential oils from the eucalyptus can clear nasal congestion and inflammation related to infections.
Talk to someone
We people tend to go through everything all by ourselves which is not always a good thing. If you have a lot on your mind, talk with a friend! Other people can see your situation from a distance, which can help you to see things from another perspective. Try to be open for different opinions and help!
Sometimes it’s okay to distract yourself for a little while! Get cosy on the couch or in bed and watch your favorite Netflix series or read a good book. You can burn some sage or incense and light up a few candles to make it extra cosy. Grab your favorite snacks and drinks and enjoy some time off! Having some time off gives your mind a break and we all need that from time to time!
When your head feels full with stress it’s good to do a little fact check. Grab a notebook and a pen and write down everything that’s on your mind. It’s time to put all your thoughts and feelings on paper. And when you’re done: try to look at it with an objective perspective. Are you making things bigger or are you over reacting? Big chance that everything isn’t as bad as you thought before. Now you can move on with a calmer mind!
Focus on the present moment
We are all so caught up in our heads, that we forget to live and enjoy the present moment. When you catch yourself in your head, try to really focus on what you are doing at the moment. For example: when you are drinking your morning coffee, try to really taste it and feel the warmth. Or when you’re walking outside: really look around and notice all the little details, the fresh flower, the birds.. Try to really feel, smell and hear each moment!
Count your blessings
Last but not least: count your blessings! There is so much to be grateful for in life. Like the friends and family you have and the roof over your head. Or the amazing meal you had last night. Try to think about all the things your grateful for on a daily base. Really make a habit of gratitude! This will definitely have a great effect on your mind.
